Work at sea

So, how do you get a job at sea?

One of the questions I’m asked most often is, “How do I get started working on ships?”

The answer depends on the type of role you’re looking for. Some positions require you to apply directly to a cruise line or shipping company, while others are recruited through specialist agencies.

Before submitting applications, it’s worth taking some time to consider a few important questions.

1. Be Clear About Why You Want to Work at Sea

Working at sea can be an incredible adventure, but it isn’t simply a travelling holiday with a pay cheque.

Contracts can be demanding, shifts can be long, and you’ll spend extended periods away from family and friends. Understanding your motivations will help you choose the right role, company, and vessel.

2. Research the Company You’re Applying To

Not all ships, cruise lines, or shipping companies and colleges are the same.

Take time to understand:

  • Their values and culture
  • The type of passengers or clients they serve
  • The destinations they visit
  • The onboard lifestyle they offer crew

The more informed you are, the better equipped you’ll be to decide whether the company is a good fit for you.

3. Speak to People Who Have Done It

One of the best ways to understand ship life is to talk to people who have lived it.

First step – Read Ship Life..

Seek out current or former crew members, ask questions, join online communities, and learn from their experiences. Their insights can help you prepare for both the opportunities and challenges that life at sea can bring.

4. Bring Energy, Enthusiasm and a Positive Attitude

Technical skills can get you an interview, but attitude and approach often determines success.

Life on board requires resilience, flexibility, teamwork, and a willingness to adapt. Employers are looking for people who can contribute positively to the onboard environment, even during busy and demanding periods.

Remember…

Ship life isn’t for everyone—and that’s okay.

The goal isn’t simply to get a job at sea. The goal is to find out whether the lifestyle, environment, and opportunities are right for you.

The more you understand before you join your first ship, the better prepared you’ll be to make the most of the experience.
